Care of Collections: Metal Objects

 Presented By: Balboa Art conservation Center

This workshop will provide a basic introduction to metals and their properties, the metals and alloys used in ancient and historic objects, and some simple ways of identifying different metals.  The workshop will examine the environmental conditions that cause corrosion of metals and measures that museums can take to mitigate these conditions.  Participants will learn basic handling, housekeeping and security for metal collections, and will be provided with guidelines for storage and display of metal objects. This workshop is intended to provide participants with baseline information for the care and management collections containing objects ranging from fine silver to bronze sculpture to historic iron.
